Sparkles Goes to Boston Children’s Book Wins Four Prestigious National Awards

Firehouse Dog Publishing Announces Sparkles Goes to Boston as a multi-award winner in the 7th Annual “Best Books” Awards by USA Book News

CLARKSVILLE, ARSparkles Goes to Boston, a children’s fire safety book by Firefighter Dayna Hilton, has won four national awards in the 7th Annual “Best Book Awards presented by USA Book News.

The book has been selected as the Winner in the Children's Picture Book: Softcover Non-Fiction category and a Finalist in the Children’s Book Series, Children’s Non-Fiction category and Animals/Pets: General categories.

Winners and finalists traversed the publishing landscape: Simon & Schuster, Penguin/Putnam, Rodale, McGraw-Hill, John Wiley & Sons, Moody Publishers, American Cancer Society, Sourcebooks, and hundreds of independent houses contributed to this year’s competition.

Southborough Fire Department (MA) is the location of Author Dayna Hilton’s second in a series of children’s books, Sparkles Goes to Boston. The book, which chronicles Sparkles’ big trip to visit Firefighter Jim at the fire station, includes age appropriate fire safety tips which are based on Oklahoma State University Fire Protection Publication’s comprehensive preschool curriculum project for young children. Firefighter Jim, Sparkles, and her two-legged friend, Firefighter Dayna, are the main characters of the book. Chief Mauro and firefighters from the department are also featured in the fun and educationally sound fire safety book. Colorful pictures complement this story about Sparkles.

Hilton stated, “Children under the age of five are at much greater risk of fire-related deaths than others. The group accounts for 11% of fire-related deaths in the United States ~ the highest population for any age group. I was inspired by my work as a firefighter and by my four-legged friend, Sparkles, to create this fun and educationally sound book. What an honor that the book has been selected from such a broad field of children’s book authors and publishers.”

For almost a decade, Hilton and her fire safety dogs have made it their mission to save lives, reduce injuries and decrease property losses from fire. In recent years, she and her fire safety dogs have concentrated their fire safety efforts on pre-schoolers, kindergartners, first graders and their caregivers.

Jeffrey Keen, President and CEO of USABookNews.com, noted that this year’s contest yielded an unprecedented number of entries. Keen says of the awards, now in their eighth year, “The 2010 results represent a phenomenal mix of books from a wide array of publishers throughout the United States.”

This brings the total to six national awards for Hilton’s children’s fire safety books. The books are available at Amazon.com and at book stores.

A complete list of the winners and finalists may be found at www.usabooknews.com.

Cesar's Way Magazine Features Article about Firehouse Dog Publishing's Children's Fire Safety Book, Sparkles the Fire Safety Dog

Seven years ago, Firehouse Dog Publishing's children's author, Firefighter Dayna Hilton was surfing the internet looking to add a Dalmatian to her family and found “Daisy” on the Dalmatian Assistance League of Tulsa website. Never in a million years did Hilton ever dream that that moment would be the beginning of their journey in the fire service together. According to Hilton, she and Sparkles have been blessed with having so many amazing to share the fire safety message far and wide to millions of children and their caregivers.

Hilton is grateful to Cesar Millan and everyone at Cesar’s Way Magazine and Sparkles’ story is shared in a three page spread in the July issue of the magazine. The icing on the cake is that the magazine will also include fire safety tips. This means more to Hilton and Sparkles more than anything. Helping save the lives of children and their caregivers, reducing injuries and decreasing property loss from fire, that is the mission of Hilton and everyone at Firehouse Dog Publishing. Every fiber of our being is dedicated to helping keep everyone safe!

Firehouse Dog Publishing would like to share a very special thank you with Rick Markham, the writer of Sparkles’ inspirational story. Rick, we appreciate you more than you know and we enjoyed the whole experience so very much!

According to his website, Cesar has been called a Dr. Phil for dogs, and for good reason. Cesar's amazing rehabilitations of aggressive, scared, lazy, compulsive, and jealous dogs captured the national spotlight when his National Geographic Channel (NGC) series Dog Whisperer premiered in September 2004. Regular viewers soon came to realize it wasn't the dogs but the quirky owners who needed Cesar's help the most. In January 2006, Dog Whisperer returned for a primetime second season with expanded hour-long episodes.

Cesar’s Way is an all-inclusive lifestyle magazine for loving and dedicated dog owners. This publication was founded by and is editorially directed by Cesar Millan, an internationally known professional dog trainer and truly an expert in his field. Also known as “The Dog Whisperer,” Cesar offers his readership authoritative practices, philosophies, and teachings. Every issue of Cesar’s Way includes real-life testimonials, feature articles, exclusive interviews, and advice columns. This publication provides information on a wide range of relevant topics, such as nutrition, behavior, familial assimilation, training, and more. The articles in Cesar’s Way focus on specific issues that all canine owners come across; for example, how to prepare your dog for travel, how to maintain a pup-friendly home, how to connect with your dog’s energy levels, and much more. Sections titled “Your Photos…” and “Pup Stars” are included in every issue, and feature the adorable and melt-worthy pictures that any canine-lover will look forward to. Cesar’s Way helps dog owners be effective disciplinarians, while instilling comfort and confidence into the beloved relationships they share with man’s best friend.”

The issue will be out on the shelves in a couple of weeks. We would love to hear what you think about the article!
